When designing this logo, we had a few things in mind. Firstly, football of course. Secondly, that it should also represent the black forest region and Freiburg.
Something that many people immediately think about when they think about the black forest region is this: the iconic Bollenhut. This specific type of headdress has become somewhat of a local mascot in the last 100 years. This is why you will be seeing this hat everywhere in Freiburg, in all shapes and forms, to take home as a souvenir. If you want to know more about it, continue reading!
Our version of the hat, of course, features some things that are not traditional for the Bollenhut. Obviously, it had to be Caligula-striker-green instead of the traditional red or black wool. One ball has been replaced with a football and a miniature version of the black forest is growing on it.
Last but not least: the iconic silhouette of the Freiburg cathedral. Fun fact: it is the first gothic cathedral to have a tower made entirely out of openwork, with many european cathedrals to be inspired by this innovative design.

The original Bollenhut is part of the traditional dress of exactly three little villages in the black Forest: Wolfach-Kirnbach, Hornberg-Reichenbach and Gutach. The Hat is only one part of the intricate dress, and is still produced traditionally by hand. The balls on top are made of wool, kind of like very dense pom-poms. They are mounted on a hat made of straw and plaster, to support the heavy woolen balls.

The hat gained popularity through movies like Schwarzwaldmädel (1950) (“black-forest girl”), a time where the black forest was already visited by many tourists as well as people seeking relaxation and better health in one of the many health resorts that were popularized in the 19th century. Today, it is viewed as a symbol for the etire black forest region, even though the hat itself is only worn in three villages. There are many, many other traditional dresses here, almost every village has their own distinctive style or variaton.
