Freiburger Muenster
The most famous landmark of Freiburg is probably the Freiburg Münster, a Romanesque-Gothic church consecrated as Roman Catholic. It was built from around 1200 to 1513 and has risen above the city ever since.

Medieval Freiburg
In the cityscape, one can still see remnants of the fortifications that protected the city in the Middle Ages. They are still visible through the two city gates, the Martinstor and the Schwabentor. The Martinstor is located on Kaiser-Joseph-Straße (the KaJo), Freiburg’s main shopping street. The Schwabentor is located next to the Gerberau, which some people consider to be the most beautiful part of the city.

Vauban fortification
Between 1677 and 1697, Freiburg was transformed into a modern fortress city by the renowned military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban during French rule. After another conflict and the return of the city to the Austrians in the mid-18th century, it was dismantled by the French and thus rendered unusable. However, remnants of the fortifications can still be seen in the cityscape today (e.g., Breisacher Tor, Rempartmensahügel).

the UB (university library)
After the university was founded in 1457, the University Library of Freiburg (short UB) was also established starting in 1470. It therefore has a long tradition. The current building has been in use since 2015 and has sparked such strong controversy due to several planning mistakes that the satire show extra3 created a skit about it:

Colombi-
schloessle
Freiburgs archaeological museum
The Colombischlössle is a widow’s residence from 1861, built on the ruins of the old Vauban fortress. Today, it houses Freiburg’s archaeological museum, which focuses on prehistory and Roman antiquity in the Black Forest. It is always worth a visit!

Augustinermuseum
The Augustinermuseum is another historical museum in Freiburg. It was established in the renovated building of a former Augustinian monastery. On display are collections of art from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period, as well as 19th-century paintings, the collections of the Diocesan Museum of the Archdiocese of Freiburg, and the exhibits of the former Museum of Freiburg’s Urban History.
